Join an upcoming Gender Focus webinar on the role of women’s movements in challenging the militarisation of Myanmar on 28 September 2021 at 10:00 AM (British Summer Time). This webinar will be hosted by the University of Portsmouth.
Background
Myanmar (Burma) has had a turbulent history, with the military (known as the Tatmadaw) dominating the political arena in the country since World War 2.
This was the case even during the more recent period of so-called democracy from 2015 until the recent military coup on 1 February 2021 when the military attempted to reassert their total control over the people.
The country is made up of many different ethnic groups, including the Rohingya, and under this period of military expansion and domination, recognition of citizenship and human rights have been significant issues for many of the country’s people.
Women and children have suffered the most, and women have been playing a major active role in the revolutions in support of democracy not just in 2021, but in earlier revolutions in 1988 and 2007.
