Our virtual roundtable discussion on “The double impact of COVID and the UK aid cuts on and for the lives of girls and women in the Global South” will now be held on 29 June 2021.
Development practitioners and activists working on various issues relating to gender in the global South will join the discussion. They will reflect on the devastating and lasting impact the global pandemic has had on reductions in prevalence rates of different forms of violence including harmful cultural practices and modern slavery.
Listening to and documenting the stories of girls and women whose lives have suddenly become even more vulnerable and marginalised is a crucial central goal of Gender Focus.
This round table will represent the start of targeted activities committed to supporting those working and lobbying to reverse the deterioration in the lives of so many as a result of both COVID and aid reductions.
Our experts at the roundtable discussion
- Jane Meme. Monitoring, Evaluation and Gender Expert based in Nairobi, Kenya. Currently working on an End FGM/C programme

Our panelists will discuss the full impact of COVID on the life chances and safety of millions of girls and young women, as at the same time the UK government cuts aid to programmes supporting them. These critical areas of support cover sexual and reproductive health, girls education programmes, water and sanitation projects, interventions to reduce FGM/C and child marriage and the sexual exploitation of children.
This sobering reality means that the voices of social justice and gender rights warriors are even more important now.
