This short e-learning course is focussed on developing an understanding of gender and how research related to gender is best conducted in the context of international development. It explores the concepts and nature of gender, and the challenges faced when conducting research on gender and gender based violence in different contexts.  The course explores gender concepts and norms, the importance of context, research methods and measurement of impact.

It is an introductory level course for students, practitioners and policymakers who wish to learn more about this topic. The course draws on the experience of University of Portsmouth and partner organisations and stakeholders, in conducting recent and ongoing gender related research projects in Nepal, Myanmar, Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Sudan, Kenya and Zimbabwe, and features content related to these projects provided by nationals from some of those countries.

The aims of the course are as follows:

To develop the knowledge and understanding of students, practitioners and policymakers of the importance of gender in international development, taking into account diverse contexts

To provide students, practitioners and policymakers involved in or drawing upon gender related research with an understanding of frameworks, methods and approaches, and how research activities can be most effective in supporting impact.

To enable students to learn from different contexts and perspectives by having access to learning resources that reflect diverse perspectives from different parts of the world.

This e-learning course is not intended to provide conclusive answers to all the issues and questions that arise, and is not prescriptive in setting out a particular approach to gender related research.

When you have completed this study, we hope that you will be able to adapt and apply this learning to your context and contribute to an overall mission to increase gender equity and reduce the significant levels of violence that women in particular continue to experience.
