The Importance of Context
We start our study with a focus on context as the context in which women work is of great significance when exploring the connection between women’s economic engagement and violence. It needs to be understood in some depth in order to design policy and practical responses aimed at reducing violence against women. It is therefore the key theme for the first part of this e-learning course. Let’s start by noting how gender equality and violence against women are located in the Sustainable Development Goals:
So, what factors could be important when assessing different contexts and how women might experience violence in those contexts? Take a look at the photo below, and first of all note down any thoughts you have on what forms of violence might be encountered in this type of situation. Then click on the ‘hot spots’ on the photo for some suggestions.
The economic context in which women find themselves, is of particular importance, as experiences of violence at work can vary greatly for those women working from home, within the informal economy, or within formal employment. So within our study we have looked at these different economic contexts and also reflected on the nature of poverty and vulnerability and how this influences experience of violence. The analytical framework for the study is introduced in detail in our second course theme where we focus on methods.
